Relive a 17th century Londoner’s life as if he were a blogger today.

John Evelyn was an famous English writer or diarist based in 17th century London, UK. His work, along with the writing of Samuel Pepys, bring to life a surprisingly similar world peppered with some stark differences too.

2023-12: John Evelyn Blog is currently under active development and may not be fully functional at the moment.

Whilst digging though RSS feeds and blogs I came across Phil Gyford and his blog publication for Samuel Pepys. I fell in-love with the idea and this heavily inspired me to make something similar for Evelyn too.

The site is aiming for longevity, partly due to the length of the blog run but also to preserve the historical documents for future generations in a more modern and consumable format. You’ll eventually be able to subscribe to “live” posts from Evelyn by RSS and email soon.

For those too excited (or too impatient!) there’s a full archive of all his writings broken down into individual blog posts in the archive also.

The site uses some utility scripts to scrape the content from the Gutenberg Project files of his dairy, and then constructs a Jekyll static site generated site for deployment on Cloudflare.

Visit the John Evelyn Blog.

Thanks for the inspiration and the support in getting this project off the ground Phil!
